SUITE: IN G : Ambrosius

Hermann Ambrosius belongs to the early Modern Period of
music. The first movement sounds impressionistic and thus reminds
me of Ravel. There is the typical "imitation of voices" be-
ginning the fugue in the second movement. The third movement
is beautifully somber. The prominent use of pentatonic (5-note)
scales in the fourth movement brings the trio to a close.

DUO FOR TWO GUITAR, OP. 34 Sor

Fernando Sor was an outstanding guitarist of the late
Classical-Early Romantic Period. This composition reflects both
periods of music by having a balanced form (i.e. Classical) with
a noticeable use of emotionalism (i.e. Romantic).

TRIO IN A MINOR : Vivaldi

This trio was originally composed for violin, lute, and cello.
The Trio Sonata was one of the most popular types of chamber music
in the Baroque Period. The first and second movements are in
binary form (two-part) with the repeat of the last section omitted.
In the third movement, both of the sections are repeated.

SIX ROUMANIAN FOLK SONGS Bartok

This composition belongs to the Modern Period with its use
of complex rhythms and modal scales. Due to the use of folk
materials, I believe this piece belongs to Bartok's middle
period of composition.

THE FLATT PAVIN AND GALLIARD ; Johnson

John Johnson was the lutenist to the Royal Chapel from 1581-
1595. A pavane (pavin is the English spelling) was a 16th-

century court dance of Italian origin. 1Its meter +s usually
in four and has a slow, stately tempo. A galliard was a lively
16th-century court dance again of Italian origin. Its meter is

occasionally in three and often follows a pavane.

LONDON TRIO III Haydn

Haydn originally composed this trio for 2 flutes and cello.
He is the first major composer of the Classical Period. The
first and third movements are in binary form with the repeat
of the last sSection again omitted. The ternary form (three-part)
of the second movement provides a contrast.
