Fheusnow e Sotal il ARSI e s donad Edward Elgar
(1857 = 1934)
Countless graduates throughout the years have marched
to Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance'". This piece, in a
much different style, was originally for womens chorus.
It is performed tonight in arrangement for the winds
and saxophones of the band.
DAEBREAE . oLiivsvvisnplihaniiviisanintasine Vaclav Nelhybel
Conducted by John Gilmore (b. 198
The estampie was a Medeval dance form, in which solo-
ists alternated with the group, singing and dancing
in a kind of 'round'. In this composition featuring
a sextet of antiphonal brass, the expressive woodwind
passages alternate with the marcato brass to form a
parallel with the ancient form.
John Gilmore, the band's Assistant Conduétor, is making
his conducting debut tonight. He has been Mr. Hazzard's
assistant for two semesters and has well deserved this
opportunity to get out from '"behind the scenes''.
Sudte hfamedase. o k. e S e Gaui s i Darius Milhaud
1. Normandie (1892 - 1974)
2. Bretagne
3. Ile de France
4. Alsace-Lorraine
5. Provence
As its name implies, this suite is a tour of five areas
in France with each movement making use of tunes and
rhythms which are common to the regions. Darius Milhaud
was one of the famous ''French Six", a group of composers
who tried to incorporate dance hall music and jazz into
their "'serious'" compositions. Honegger and Poulenc were
also members of '"les six'".
American Folk Rhapsody No. 3 Clare Grundman
(bh. 2913)
Mr. Grundman has written four "Folk Rhapsodies'" all
basically medlies of famous American folk tunes. He
has been able to keep the tunes recognisable while still
allowing for his own unique settings and harmonizations.
The folk tunes used in this Rhapsody are Colorado Trail,
Git Along Little Dogies, Carless Love and Turkey in the
Straw.
