Berklee Performance Center Concerts
Spring 1998
February 18- On a More Classical Note/The Billy Childs Suite -
Under the direction of Dawn Daggs and faculty advisor Julius Williams, this
concert opens by highlighting the activity of black performers in classical music
including pieces for various combinations of flute, piano violin and trumpet.
Then composer Paul Beaudry and faculty advisor Walter Beasley will present a
homage to African-American composer/jazz pianist Billy Childs with a six-
movement original jazz suite reflecting the different styles of Childs’ writing and
displaying the elements that he has added to the art of jazz composition.
February 19- - Bass Department Student Concert - Bass students—Yoshi
Waki, Dylan Uren, Ryoji Yamashiki, corey Wentworth, Chris Pottinger, Dana
Decker— under the direction of Department Chair Rich Appleman, and Assistant
Chair John Repucci perform jazz, funk, rock and fusion composiions in six small
groups with special guests faculty bassists John Repucci and Bruno Raberg.
February 24- The Real Hip-Hop/A History with Your Name On It-
In the first half of this concert Thelma Hyppolite and faculty advisor Winston
Maccow will present a variety of Hip-hop stylists performing original music for
DJ., drums, piano, bass, guitar and horns. Then Arthur Rogiers and faculty
advisor Larry Watson, will present a history of African-American musical forms
and culture through music performance, dramatic interpretation, narrations and
monologues.
February 25 - Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts Big Band - During a
week long visit to Berklee, this premiere jazz ensemble from one of the leading
arts high schools in the world will be performing a program of big band jazz.
Under the direction of Berklee Alum Yossi Regev, a number of students from this
band have gone on to attend Berklee.
February 26 - Kendrick Oliver & The New Life Jazz Orchestra featuring
Nicholas Paytonwith a special guest appearance by Roy Hargrove*
Special guest trumpeters Nicholas Payton and Roy Hargrove join Kendrick Oliver
directing the New Life Jazz Orchestra in a program of big band jazz. * Roy
Hargrove will be performing with bis own group at Scullers Jazz Club at the
Double Tree Guest Suites Hotel on February 27 and 28, 1998. Berklee students
will receive a $5.00 discount with valid 1.D. on February 27 at 10:30pm.
