Applying South Indian Rhythmic and Melodic

Concepts in Composition
150 Massachusetts Avenue, Room 118

This session will explore several South Indian (Carnatic)
rhythmic and melodic concepts and show how to apply them
in a composition. The presenter will teach several rhythmic
structures through audience participation, and then show
how they can be applied in writing using the presenter’s
pieces for strings with scores and audio/video. Melodic
material will be covered as well as how to derive harmony
from the scalar materials.
