From Amadeus to Zappa: The Curious Life of

Nicolas Slonimsky
7 Haviland Street, Room 310

Who was this Russian linguist and lexicographer who
influenced Ives, Cowell, Coltrane, and Zappa? Author,
composer, and conductor Nicolas Slonimsky traveled the
world, collecting music and championing new works. As a
theoretician, he wrote his legendry volume Thesaurus of
Scales and Melodic Patterns, challenging composers to think
in terms of symmetrical scales and pandiatonicism. This
session will explore the life and contributions of this unique
individual.
