Berklee College of Music
Founded in 1945, Berklee College of Music is
the world’s largest independent music college
and the premier institution for the study of
contemporary music. The college’s 2,650 stu-
dents and 300 faculty members interact in an
environment designed to provide the most com-
plete learning experience possible, including all
of the opportunities and challenges presented
by a career in the contemporary music indus-
try. Using Berklee’s extensive facilities, located
in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, students
develop musical competencies in such areas as
composition, performance, and recording/pro-
duction, and also learn to make the informed
business decisions necessary to career success.
Since the college’s inception, one of its primary
goals has been to foster international under-
standing through the medium of contemporary
music. Young musicians come to Berklee from
every corner of the earth to stitly American
popular music, and as a resul

Berklee offers student musicians courses of
study toward a fully accredited four-year bac-
calaureate degree or diploma. The broad-based
curriculum includes majors in such fields as
Performance, Composition, Music Production
and Engineering, Film Scoring, Music
Business/Management, Music Synthesis, and
Music Education. The college will inaugurate a
new Music Therapy major in the fall of 1996.
Lee Eliot Berk, the college’s president since
1979, has led Berklee throughout the growth of
the past two decades. His wife Susan G. Berk
has been an active supporter of his role in
these complex tasks. He has particularly cham-
pioned the college’s expansion in the areas of
music technolog usic business, and commu-
nity affairs, as its internationalization.
