Berklee Performance Center Concerts

SPRING 1992

PERCUSSION UNLIMITED—This year’s annual Percussion Depart-
ment concert features Department Chair Dean Anderson performing
with the Berklee Virtual Orchestra—an all-MIDI quartet with Music
Synthesis Department Chair Dennis Thurmond, Woodwind Depart-
ment Chair Matt Marvuglio, and MP&E faculty member Richard
Boulanger. Percussion faculty member Steve Wilkes will showcase
the Berklee World Beat Pop lab in a variety of African selections
followed by acoustic percussion works by Jeff Fischer, Gordon Stout,
and ensemble member Yusuke Yamamoto. In addition, Assistant
Professor Jon Hazilla will be featured drum set soloist in a tribute to
Max Roach.

THE BERKLEE CONCERT JAZZ ORCHESTRA—Renowned faculty
trumpeter/arranger/composer Herb Pomeroy leads the most presti-
gious ensembile in the college in a program of contemporary big
band music.

THE BERKLEE CONCERT WIND ENSEMBLE—Under the direction
of Assistant Chair of the Composition Department Greg Fritze, this 45-
piece ensemble of woodwinds, brass, and percussion will feature two
student competition winners. Saxophonist Tomoko Narumi, winner
of the 8th Annual Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition, will perform
the Glazanov Saxophone Concerto, and Yusuru Sadashige, winner of
the 9th Annual Wind Ensemble Composition Competition, will have
his “Fantasy for Wind Ensemble” performed. Student conductor John
Lamar will conduct Percy Craingeu’s “Children’s March” and pieces by
Persichetti, Bernstein, and Stamp will be performed.

WHAT SHALL I CALL—Berklee’s Reverence Gospel Ensemble, under
the direction of faculty member Dennis Montgomery III and assisted
by Ensemble Department Chair Orville Wright, will perform tradi-
tional and contemporary gospel music compositions by John P. Kee,
O. Cosby, and Dennis Montgomery III.
