Berklee Per formance Center Concerts
SPRING 1991
THE BRIAN LEWIS BIG BAND — A broad spectrum of musical
styles from traditional bebop to contemporary fusion will be
performed by a 19-piece big band under the direction of faculty
trumpeter Brian Lewis. Featured compositions and arrangements
are by Lewis, faculty members Don Nolan and Jerry Cecco and
student Daniel Hamuy. Guest performers include faculty members
Fred Schmidt, trombone, and Wayne Naus, trumpet, as well as
Cecco and Lewis.
A TRIBUTE TO MONK—The Piano Department faculty, under
the direction of Chairman Paul Schmeling, present a tribute to jazz
legend Thelonious Monk with a series of small groups playing origi-
nal arrangements of compositions by the late pianist. Featured fac-
ulty members include pianists Jeff Covell, Suzanna Sifter, Bill Davies,
Makoto Takenaka and special guest Alex Elin on tenor saxophone.
THERE’S NOTHING ON T.V. TONIGHT/THE ECLECTIC BAND
—Composer/keyboardist Jonathan Dryden leads a nine-piece
ensemble performing original contemporary jazz compositions
and featuring arrangements for three vocalists— Carolina Brandes,
Paula Cole and Jill Siefers. In the second half, composer/arranger
Daniel Hamuy presents original funk and Latin styles for a big band
with special guest faculty saxophonist Bob Zung,
THE YUKI ARIMASA TRIO/ “SIMPLE; CHANGE THE
GRAVITATIONAL CONSTANT OF THE UNIVERSE”—In the
first half, faculty pianist Yuki Arimasa presents jazz originals for
piano trio. Then, the Continuum Jazz Brass Band, six brass and
drums, under the direction of faculty trombonist/composer/
arranger Bob Pilkington, performs a variety of styles from
Hoagy Carmichael to John Coltrane to Led Zepplin.
