Creating a Modern Musician
by
Lorin Xavier Rivers
Background
•
I am a pianist from Columbus, Ohio
•
Played piano for as long as I can remember, but started
lessons at age 7 at Capital University
•
Graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2017
Artist Identity
•
As I see myself now - I see myself as a musician that is
versatile and can adjust to many different situations. As
well as a curious musician.
•
Where I want to be - I see myself in the future as a
musician that is as complete as possible. In
performance, composition, production, and also being
involved in film and television
Inspirations
•
The inspirations for this this project are some of my
favorite overall musicians. Musicians who are versatile
and can flourish in any environment. Performance,
composition, production, and writing commercially as
well
•
Terrace Martin, Quincy Jones, Kanye West, Hans Zimmer,
Olafur Arnalds, Questlove
Goals of the Project
•
Artist Identity and Analyzing the Music that moves me
•
Studying music in 3 different areas (performance,
composition, and production)
•
Increase my knowledge and understanding
Performance
Bill Evans
•
The melodic and harmonic depth of Bill Evans
•
Transcriptions, analysis, and charts
•
Implementation of these phrases and shapes into my
own musicality
Bill Evans Characteristics
•
I looked for characteristics of Evans’ playing. Numerous
things appeared but I focused on a few
•
One for instance is his use of 11ths on major chords as
the start of his phrase.
Use of Quarter Note Triplets
•
Another major aspect of Evans’ playing is his rhythmic
sense, and specifically his use of quarter note triplets.
•
This is interesting because it really adds a breath and
width to his playing and stretches the bar
Composition
Moonchild
•
Transcription and analysis of chord progressions
•
Finding the characteristics that make a song sound like
a Moonchild song
•
Taking this information and use it in my own way
Moonchild Characteristics
•
One very big characteristic is the prevalent use of minor
chords and on those minor chords the use of the 11th.
Use of These Ideas
•
With these ides in mind I wanted to write a bit with these
concepts at the forefront
It Means To Me
Production
James Blake
• Specifically the vocal production of James Blake
• Develop a template to create vocal harmonies
• Sounds that I think are interesting and see how many
voices are possible
• Create a template for both the live stage and for the studio
• To be continued
Conclusion
•
In conclusion, I hope that this project will be a resource
for musicians that are looking to expand the
understanding on any particular concept. That they will
take this template and interoperate it.
