Double Concert — THE ROAR OF LYONS/DOWN TO EARTH — Sax-
ophonist Sean Lyons opens this two-for-one concert with a set of
straight-ahead jazz originals and compositions by Ellington, Gillespie
and others with original arrangements by Lyons and guest performer,
faculty guitarist Jackson Schultz. In the second half, a quartet led
by drummer Gordon Grottenthaler, with special guest faculty mem-
bers Whit Browne, bass, and Bill Mobley, trumpet, will perform jazz
compositions of Herbie Hancock, Woody Shaw, Dexter Gordon
and o}hers.
ICE CREAM PANTS — Faculty guitarist Stephen Rochinski presents
an evening of original contemporary jazz-rock performed by an
all-faculty octet.
RED MILLER — Original rock and roll by the quintet Red Miller, led by
vocalist/synthesist/composer Fred Miller, will feature selections from
their debut album Out of the Blue.
Double Concert — FOCAL POINT/NIKOLAJ BENTZON'S GRADUA-
TION CONCERT — Bassist/composer Tsukasa Fukubayashi leads his
quartet in a program of contemporary improvisational fusion. In the
second half of this double concert, Nikolaj Bentzon presents original
progressive contemporary jazz for his quintet.
Double Concert — A JAZZ QUINTET/STICK MAN — The evening’s
program opens with standards and contemporary jazz originals per-
formed by Hans Jensen and his quintet with special guest, faculty
saxophonist Jim Odgren. In the second half, Katsu Tanaka, playing
the Chapman stick and stick synthesizer, presents an evening of
techno-jazz-rock in solo, duet and trio settings.
