Berklee Performance Center Concerts

SPRING 1987

Double Concert — THE LATIN JAZZ UNION/HIGH PLAINS — A
six-piece ensemble led by faculty bassist Irving Cancel opens this
concert with Latin jazz standards and originals. In the second half
faculty saxophonist Randy Felts offers a new impressionistic music of
the 1980s influenced by an eclectic blend of modal-pop styles, from
New Age to Broadway.

THE ALEX ELIN QUARTET — Faculty saxophonist/pianist Alex Elin
brings a quartet with Gray Sargent, guitar, Charlie LaChapelle, bass,
and faculty drummer Joe Hunt to the Performance Center for an
evening of modern jazz.

Double Concert — MACUMAYE-AYE/SAUDADE — Opening this
concert is bassist/composer/arranger Rafael Reina with an evening of
original contemporary funk and Afro-p()p styles for a large ensemble.
In the second half senior percussionist Michael Ringquist presents
Afro-Brazilian music for rhythm section and vocals.

Double Concert — J & F/STOLEN MOMENTS — THE TRADITION
LIVES ON — Guitarist Akihiko Matsui opens this evening’s music
with a quartet playing original jazz fusion compositions. Drummer
David Greenaway then presents acoustic mainstream jazz by
Ellington, Monk, Blakey and others in a sextet setting.

Double Concert — MARK'S MOOD/BROHEMIA — A double
concert of mainstream jazz performed by two student-led ensembles
opens with guitarist Mark Whitfield's quartet in “Mark’s Mood.”

In the second half trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis presents originals
and music of Ellington, Wynton Marsalis and others in quartet and
quintet settings.

BOBBY JONES AND NEW LIFE WITH THE REVERENCE GOSPEL
ENSEMBLE — As part of Berklee’s Black Music Celebration for Black
History Month, internationally renowned gospel singer Bobby Jones
will perform contemporary and traditional gospel music with
Berklee’s own Reverence Gospel Ensemble under the direction of
Dennis Montgomery III.

Double Concert — FAIR PLAY/TRIBUTARY — Faculty
guitarist/composer Rick Peckham presents a quintet playing a cross
section of music from the jazz tradition and originals in a
contemporary style. In the second half faculty bassist/composer
Bruno Raberg leads a twelve-piece ensemble in a program of
contemporary jazz fusion featuring faculty members Bruce Barth,
piano, Greg Badolato, saxophone, and Ken Cervenka, trumpet.

JAMES MOODY — As part of Berklee's Black Music Celebration for
Black History Month, famed saxophonist and flutist James Moody will
perform with a quartet including faculty bassist John Neves.
