Berklee Performance Center Concerts

FALL 1993

CLASSIC TOUCH/THE DEEPEST THINGS IN COMMON—Piano
Department faculty member Makoto Takenaka presents classical music
of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and Schuman as well as his
original compositions all played in jazz arrangements for piano trio. In
the second half, original contemporary jazz with funk and African
influences by faculty pianist Marc Rossi, saxophonist/vocalist Stan
Strickland and bassist Jim Bridges will be performed in a sextet setting.

JOHN PEZANELLI & FRIENDS/BLUES & JAZZ BARGAINS—Bop and
post-bop era composers Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Carla Bley, and
others will be featured in this quartet performance under the direction
of faculty guitarist John Pezanelli. Faculty members John Arcaro,
piano, and Marcello Pellitieri, drums, and a surprise bassist will round
out the group. Then, Guitar Department faculty Michael Williams
presents blues and jazz by Clarence Gatemouth Brown, T-Bone
Walker, Ray Charles,and Horace Silver in a quartet setting.

YOUR RED WAGON/A QUINTET—Faculty vocalist/pianist Maggi
Scott presents an evening of jazz vocals and instrumentals in trio and
septet settings with arrangements by faculty member Greg Hopkins
and featuring a faculty band with Jeff Stout, trumpet, Bill Pierce,
saxophone, Tony Lada, trombone, Tim Ray, piano, Dave Clark, bass,
and Joe Hunt, drums. In the second half, Consuelo Candelaria leads
her quintet in a program of contemporary music.

NORTHERN LIGHTS—Faculty drummer Dave Weigert is joined by
student and faculty musicians in settings from trio to septet for a
concert of original and ECM influenced contemporary jazz. Faculty
musicians include Ken Cervenka, trumpet, and Bruno Raberg, bass,
and compositions by student guitarist Paul Pesonen will be featured.

2000 NOT OUT?/THE ART OF IMPROVISATION—Student pianist
Steve Hamilton teams with Percussion Department Assistant Chair and
vibraphonist Ed Saindon for a duet concert of jazz standards and
original compositions. Straight ahead jazz will be featured in the
second half in a quintet performance led by student alto saxophonist
Nobutaka Yamada. ;
