Berklee Performance Center Concerts



Spring 1998

February 9 - Standard Original - Faculty vocalist Lisa Thorson presents main-
stream original jazz for her quintet featuring Tim Ray, piano, faculty member
David Clark, bass, George Schuller, drums, and Cercie Miller, reeds. The reper-
toire will include compositions featuring innovative arrangements of jazz
standards and original material written by members of the quintet, featuring Ms.
Thorson’s lyrics.

February 10- On My Way/A Chat with Ornette - Saxophonist Samuel Thomas is
joined by pianist Toru Dodo, Bbassist Massimo Biolcati and crummer Marc
Gratama in a program of origianl compostiions fro jazz quartet. Then saxophon-
ist Alon Farber presents original music influenced by the music of Ornett
Coleman, Eric Dolphy and Booker Littles for three horns and rhythm section. In
addition to Toru Dodo and Massimo Biolcati, the group is rounded out by
trumpeter Avishai Cohen, saxophonist Eli Degibri and special guest Shamir
Bluemenkranz.

February 11 - Leo Blanco at the B.P.C. - Pianist Leo Blanco presents original
compositions and music by Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, and Egberto Gismonti
performed by his quartet with faculty saxophonist Dino Govoni, bassist Yoshi
Waki and drummer Eric Thompson.

February 17- For People Who I Love/Zoo People - Drummer Sangpil Yoon
presents hard bop compositions by Coltrane, Rollins, Shorter and others per-
formed by his quartet with Masanori Okazaki, tenor saxophone, Takeshi Asai,
piano and Jin-Ho Heo, bass. In the second half, guitarist Andre Kunz and Jump
World will perform original music composed and arranged by Kunz. The group
includes tenor saxophonist Ryan Woodward, keyboardist Assen Doykin, bassist
Ben Zwerin and drummer Cengiz Baysal.

February 18- On a More Classical Note/The Billy Childs Suite -

Under the direction of Dawn Daggs and faculty advisor Julius Williams, this
concert opens by highlighting the activity of black performers in classical music
including pieces for various combinations of flute, piano violin and trumpet.
Then composer Paul Beaudry and faculty advisor Walter Beasley will present a
homage to African-American composer/jazz pianist Billy Childs with a six-
movement original jazz suite reflecting the different styles of Childs’ writing and
displaying the elements that he has added to the art of jazz composition.

February 19- Bass Department Student Concert - Bass students, under the
direction of department Chair Rich Appleman, perform in Duo, Trio and small
group settings.
