August Molzer was born in Prague and moved to the U.S. at age 6. After visiting a
Czech Folk Festival near Prague in the 1920's, he was inspired to write this work
based on the colorful folk music he heard.
Darius Milhaud was one of the composers making up "Les Sixz" or the French Six who
gathered around Eric Satie in Paris during the 1920's. These composers, one of whom
was a woman, tried to incorporate jazz, caberet, and dance hall musie into their
chamber and symphonic music. In thie suite some of those types of music can be heard.
Milhaud is also known for being one of the teachers of jazz composer/pianist Dave Brubeck.
Rocky Point is a wind-swept resort area of the Rhode Island coast.
Vincent Persichetti is well known both as a composer and as a teacher and author of
composition texts. This work is an exciting and sensitive setting of selected sections
of Whitman's LEAVES OF GRASS. This performance marks the first joint effort of the
Berklee Concert Choir and Concert Band.
