The Kéln Concert: Solo Piano Improvisation

Techniques of Keith Jarrett
1140 Boylston Street, Room 1W

Keith Jarrett, 71, is considered one of the greatest solo
piano artists in the world. His landmark KéIn Concert album,
recorded more than 40 years ago, remains the best-selling
solo album in jazz history, and the best-selling piano album
in any genre. This session will provide analysis and perform
examples from the work, highlighting Jarrett’s unique
improvisational techniques and playing style on this historic
album. An opportunity for Q&A will follow the presentation
and performance.

Master Class with Marti Epstein
1140 Boylston Street, Room 2E

“The number one thing | do is to try to get students to

hear everything they write. ... Because | don't think you

can compose in a vacuum. You have to be listening to what
you're writing all the time. ... You have to develop really
good writing skills before the technology will work for you in
the way it's supposed to. And live performance, the human
element, is so intangible but so necessary and so exciting.”
—Marti Epstein

Join us for a conversation on composition and the human
element with one of Berklee’s masters, as Marti Epstein from
the Composition Department shares stories and insight from
her years as a composer and educator (at the college and
the Conservatory). Epstein is a composer whose music has
been performed by the San Francisco Symphony, the Radio
Symphony Orchestra of Frankfurt, the Pro Arte Chamber
Orchestra of Boston, Ensemble Modern, and members of
the Boston Symphony. She has completed commissions

for the Foxboro Music Association, the Fromm Music
Foundation, the Munich Biennale, the lowa Brass Quintet,
