Berklee Performance Center Concerts
FALL 1988
YESTERDAYS/18 SAXES—Senior trumpetist Ingrid Jensen leads a
sextet through a program of straight ahead jazz standards and origi-
nals featuring Danilo Perez, piano, and Lalah Hathaway, vocals. In the
second half, composer/arranger Peter Barbeau presents a saxophone
extravaganza of 4 baritone, 10 tenor and 4 alto saxophones with
drums performing an eclectic mix of big band, Bach and Hungarian
folk songs.
MIKE GARSON—Synthesist Mike Garson, as part of a two-day
major residency at Berklee, will present a concert of contemporary
synthesis styles.
JAZZ 1S AROUND THE CORNER/YEAH, RIGHT —Drummer
Masahiko Osaka leads his quartet through a program of jazz standards
by Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and others. In the
second half of this two-for-one concert, The Klique, an eleven-piece
band led by drummer David Cowan will perform funk tunes by
James Brown, George Clinton, Bernie Worell and others as well as
originals by band membets.
FALL TOGETHER—The Jazz Composition Department presents
- compositions by department faculty members including Writing
Division Chairman Ted Pease, Department Chairman Ken Pullig,
Bob Pilkington, Bruce Thomas, Greg Hopkins, Jeff Friedman,
Bill Brinkley, Scott Free and others. Various sizes of ensembles will
perform jazz and jazz-related styles.
THE BERKLEE FESTIVAL OF TRUMPETS— Trumpet Department
Chairman Ray Kotwica presents students performing contemporary,
classical and jazz styles in a variety of settings. Classical virtuoso
Anthony Plog, visiting Berklee for a day-long residency, will also
perform.
STANDING TILL THE END/STAND YOUR GROUND—In the
first half of this two-for-one concert senior guitarist Gene Shimosato
presents his quartet performing original jazz compositions. In the
second half, vocalist Fawn Field Drake leads a large ensemble per-
forming original pop, funk and show-style tunes.
BIG HAIR/OPEN IMAGES—Saxophonist Michael Sim presents
an evening of modern jazz in a quintet setting with composi-
tions by faculty trombonist Hal Crook. In the second half, pianist
Suzanna Sifter presents small group jazz and a suite for alto saxo-
phone written by Michel LeGrand and performed by Sifter and
Michael Sim.
