Berklee Performance Center Concerts
Fall 1981
October 5 Spice of Life o Directed by David Hammond. “Spice” piays all original
. compositions written by members of the band. Styles range from latin to
swing; from jazz/rock to high-energy fusion. &
October 6 Hastatras — A concert with a Jazz/latin flavour presented by the
Mexican vocalist Mili Bermejo. Featured composers are Evans, Rada,
Nascimento and Jarrett.
October 7 Susan Shanbaum in Concert — Vocalist Susan Shanbaum presents a
program that mixes rock, funk and pop styles of music.
October 13 The Greg Turner Concert — Student Greg Turner showcases his latin,
Jazz/rock and funk compositions written for smail group and big band in
this, his first Performance Center concert.
October 14 The Third Dbg Quintet — Faculty saxophonist Dan Hérrington presents
his mainstream jazz group in a return concert.
October 15 Hypertension — Directed by Steven Jenkins. This group’s great talent
and musicianship combined with a flair for entertainment makes “Hy-
pertension” one of the outstanding funk bands in today’s musijc.
October 19 The Donald Harrison Quartet — Alto saxophonist lerison leads his
quartet in a program of straight-ahead jazz music.
October 20 Kevin McCluskey Featuring Solar Wind / The Makoto Takenaka Trio
— A “two-for-one” concert featuring Kevin McCluskey's progressive
acoustic group in the first half and a program of traditional Japanese
songs arranged into a modern jazz style by Makoto Takenaka in the
second half.
October 21 It's Contagious — Faculty bassist Renee Purnel!l leads her sextet
through a program of her compositions written in the jazz/fusion idiom.
October22 The Frank & Leo Quintero Band — Brothers Frank & Leo Quintero
return to the Performance Center with their 10-piece group for another
dynamic program of jazz/rock music.
October 26 Duo — Bassist Keiichi Ishibashi and pianist Makoto Ozone team-up to
present a concert of modern jazz, bebop and swing. Guest artists will be
featured in the second halif.
