David Friend Recital Hall Concerts
July 13 Mitch Seidman and Fred Fried
— Acoustic jazz originals and standards will
be performed by a guitar duo of faculty mem-
ber Mitch Seidman and visiting artist Fred
Fried.
July 17 S is for Synthaphone - Three
Synthophones ( digital saxes ) and one “EVI”
( electric valve instrument : digital trumpet)
will front a great rhythm section perform-
ing songs in a latin-jazz-rock style including
material by Stevie Wonder and Joe Sample
as well as originals in a similar vein. Faculty
members Randy Felts and Berke McKelvey
will perform on Synthophone along with very
special guests Erik ( Robo-Sax ) Kline , on
Synthophone, and Matt Traum ( EVI .) The
rhythm section will include faculty members
Mike Ihde on guitar, Andrea Pejrolo on bass,
and Jane Potter on keyboards. Drummer Mar-
tin Vasquez and percussionist/singer Steven
Barbosa will pocket the grooves.
July 19 Rivers and Skies — This improvis-
ing ambient trio features Faculty member Ed
Blomquist, bass, guitar, synth, laptop; Jim
Whisenant on electric cello and bass and Jim
Buhrendorf on electric and acoustic, slide,
lapsteel, 12-string and resonator guitars.

— Student ensemble directed by Terri Lyne

Aug3 Bain Smith - Faculty members
Lin Biviano, Daryl Lowery, Berke McK-
elvey, Jeff Perry, Steve Wark, and Bain
Smith will play original compositions in the
tradition of the hard bop bands of the 1960s,
but with a modern sensibility. In addition
to bebop, the band will play ballads, funk,
and hip-hop influenced tunes. Many of these
tunes have been recorded by Along Came
Betty, a jazz quintet based in the Monterey,
California, in which Bain Smith is the pianist
and main composer.
