David Friend Recital Hall Concerts

April 29 - 1:00 pm - African Pop Ensemble —
African Pop music as well as originals by the
ensemble will feature an exceptionally hard
grooving drum/percussion section under the
direction of faculty member Bob Pilkington.

April 29 - 2:30 pm - Roots of Country Music
— Music from Hank Williams, Buck Owens,
Bill Monroe will be presented in both tradi-
tional and contemporary style arrangements
under the direction of faculty member John
McGann.

April 29 - 4:00 pm - Bluegrass Ensemble -
Two ensembles taught by Dave Hollender
playing traditional and contemporary vocal
and instrumental bluegrass and acoustic
music of Bill Monroe, Chris Theile, Flatt &
Scruggs, Aubrie Haynie, and originals.

April 29 - 7:30 pm - Music of Pat Metheny
Ensemble — Under the direction of Winston
Maccow.

May 2 — 1:00 pm - Small Band Advanced
Jazz Concepts Ensemble- Ensemble depart-
ment faculty member saxophonist Joe
Lovano presents this ensemble in perform-
ance.

Lovano presents this ensemble in perform-

May 2 - 4:00 pm - Back Bay Brass Jazz
Orchestra — Faculty composer, arranger and
trombonist Ben Elkins leads this student big
band in a program of contemporary arrange-
ments and compositions for big band.

May 2 — 7:30 pm - Berklee String Chamber
Orchestra - The Berklee String Orchestra,
conducted by Eugene Friesen, will present a
concert featuring the Albinoni Oboe
Concerto, Barbara Lafitte soloist, along with
music by friends of the ensemble: Mimi
Rabson, Arnold Friedman, Tim Ray and Billy
Ver Planck. The concert will include first per-
formances of Tinpan-Abulation by Berklee
composer Arnold Friedman, which features
Arnold on electric cello and Dick Melde on
electric bass. Trumpeter Greg Hopkins and
pianist Tim Ray will be heard with the
ensemble in a premiere of Ray’s arrangement
of his original composition Blues And
Rhythm. Car And Van by Berklee faculty
violinist Mimi Rabson will feature student cel-
list Matt Harmon, and Billy Ver Planck’s lulla-
by for lulu will spotlight Aaron Weinstein on
violin. Also on the program is a piece for
electric cello, strings and humpback whale by
Eugene Friesen, Humpback Harmony.
