Togo Atsia traditional Ewe
West African Drum and Dance Ensemble........ Joe Galeota, director
Togo Atsia, Horsetail Atsia , or Atsia is a social dance/ music of the Ewe, composed and performed
originally by women from Togo and Benin. These compositions empower women in local commu-
nities to express their views on social issues. The word Atsia in Ewe, literally means “to show off,
Or express ones self”. The intricate dialogues played between the master drum and support drums
Create an exciting rhythmic tapestry that often outlines a variety of down beats. Each dancer uses
two horsetails as props and strives to maintain graceful balance for the entire dance.
