Ice Cream Pants was a term that applied to the white flannel
trousers which with blue blazers formed the standard dress
for young men at the turn of the century, especially when
they were going out on a date.

The term originates in New England when around 1912
the local druggist would, along with his summer supply of
ice cream, hire a fair-haired, rosy cheeked mama's boy,
dressed in white, to tend the soft drink counter.

Because, then as now, most kids had an arfinlty for dirt,
mama's boy couldn't engage in any horse play on his way to
or from work, lest his lily white pants get soiled, since
he was, in a way, signaling that 'l can't have anything to
do with you hooligans because | might get dirty \bf | do !
