TRUMPET MADNESS II — Faculty trumpeters Tim Hagans and
Ken Cervenka return to the Performance Center with “Trumpet
Madness I1,” a program of high-energy contemporary bebop drawn
from the music of Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard
as well as originals by band members. The dueling trumpeters will
be backed by an all-star rhythm section of Bert Seager (piano),
John Lockwood (bass) and Gary Chaffee (drums).
MIRROR IMAGES — Original contemporary fusion music will be
performed by the sextet “Mirror Images,” led by faculty saxophonist
Jim Odgren and featuring guitarist Yan Maresz and pianist
Aydin Esen.
DANSE REAL — Student vocalist Susan Botti brings the sextet
“Danse Real” to the Performance Center stage to perform their own
special blend of contemporary music drawing from various pop, jazz
and ethnic styles.
Double Concert—SOULED OUT/ ARS NOVA — In the first half of
this two-for-one concert, senior guitarist Chris Horvadth leads his
12-piece band “Jamnation” through a program of pop-funk originals
and compositions by Earth, Wind & Fire, Al Jarreau and others. Bass-
ist Roland Wilson then takes the stage for “Ars Nova,” a set of original
impressionistic jazz influenced by the work of Miles Davis, Gil Evans
and Chick Corea.
Double Concert—FREE REFILL/JIMI PLAYS BERKLEE — Vibra-
phonist Jean Baptiste Bocle opens this double concert with “Free
Refill,” a program of original jazz-fusion compositions for septet.
Guitarist Michael Simington follows with his group, The New
Experience, in “Jimi Plays Berklee,” a tribute to the music of
Jimi Hendrix.
Double Concert—THE APPLE OF APPLES — Senior composer/
drummer Koichi Tanaka directs his quartet in “The Apple of Apples,”
a program of original jazz fusion compositions.
Double Concert —BATSU PERFORMANCE /READ IN BLUE — Bass-
ist Tomoyuki Shima presents original contemporary jazz for trio with
special guest tenor saxophonist Gary Joynes. In the second half,
guitarist/composer Jiro Yoshida directs his octet in a program of
original funk, fusion and jazz compositions with special guest, fac-
ulty trumpeter Dave Johnson.
