Ted Pease/Larry Monroe Sextet

Tonight's concert is the first public performance by the Ted Pease/
Larry Monroe Sextet. This group represents a departure from pre-
vious musical endeavors of Pease and Monroe. Having successfully
co-led a ]azz big band for the past five years, they have now turned
their talents to a small group setting. The sextet, the members of
which are all from the Berklee community, provides a looser, freer
setting for jazz improvisation while remaining an outlet for the writ-
ing skills of both men.

Tonight, Pease and Monroe have chosen to feature the music of
important jazz composers. The art of jazz composition is best ex-
emplified by the “jazz tune,” that is, a song written by and for jazz
musicians. For this concert, Pease and Monroe have selected ten
compositions (drawn from all periods of jazz history) which, they
feel, represent the best of this tradition. It is the belief of the co-
leaders that good jazz compositions endure and will remain a v1able
source of material for jazz performance indefinitely.

Lighting and sound fixtures used at the Berklee Performance
Center were purchased in part through a grant from the
Massachusetts Department of Community Affairs, Bi-
centennial Matching Grants Program.
