Berklee Performance Center Concerts

SPRING 1989

HEADWAY — The Composition Department presents a con-
cert of contemporary chamber music by faculty composers
Richard Applin, Scott Fessler, Gregory Fitze, Thomas Kelly,

Jon Nelson, James Reyes, James Smith, Stephany Tiernan and
Clyde Witmyer. The music represented covers a variety of instru-
mental combinations from solo tape to various duets, a trio and
an ensemble of ten trombones.

SPRING AHEAD —T.V. TUNES—The annual Commer-

cial Arranging Department concert, under the direction of
Richard Grudzinski, will feature TV themes arranged by faculty
members Bob Freedman, Bud Billings, Richard Evans,

Mirek Kocandrule, Lennie Peterson, George Hargan, Ben Elkins,
Donny Nolan, Bob Doezema, Dennis Grillo and :

Richard Grudzinski and performed by an all-faculty band.

REALM OF THE IMPROVISORS/LIVE—AND IN PERSON—
Trumpeter Mark Mazor presents a set of free jazz for trumpet, alto
saxophone, bass and drums with special guest Bob Gullotti. In the
second half, vocalist Lalah Hathaway is “Live and In Person] leading
an eight-piece band performing rhythm and blues originals and
songs that will be on her upcoming album.

KENNY BURRELL— As part of Berklee’s Black Music Celebration,
famed guitarist Kenny Burrell will perform with an all-star faculty
rhythm section.

JON DAMIAN & BILL FRISELL IN CONCERT —Faculty
guitarist Jon Damian is joined by renowned guitarist Bill Frisell
and vocalist Dominique Eade for a concert of original, contem-
porary jazz.

LAVA/SOUND OF FOCUS— Guitarist Elon Tuiseman opens
this concert with a program of original fusion f¢". his quintet with
special guest faculty trumpeter Roy Okutani. In the second half,
vibraphonist Toshihiro Akamatsu presents original electric and
acoustic jazz in a variety of instrumental settings from large
ensemble to duet.

BOBBY JONES & NEW LIFE—As part of Berklee’s Black Music
Celebration, internationally renowned gospel singer Bobby Jones
brings his group New Life to Berklee to perform with the Berklee
Reverence Gospel Ensemble.
