David Friend Recital Hall Concerts

October 20 - 7:00 p.m. - J is For Jazz- Tony
Lada Plays the Compositions of J.J. Johnson —
Faculty trombonist Tony Lada performs com-
positions of jazz trombone great J.J. Johnson
with his quartet including faculty members
Russell Hoffman, piano and Barry Smith ,
drums.

October 21, 4:00 pm - Roots and Rolls -
Faculty bassist David Hollender will play
banjo and bass and lead a band featuring
Performance Division Faculty and students.
The concert will start with contemporary and
traditional bluegrass and original tunes with
Hollender on banjo. The second half will
feature a trio of String department chair
Matt Glaser, violin Gutiar department Chair
Larry Baione and Dave playing swing and
jazz.

October 21, 7:00 pm - Ron Savage

October 25- Josh Rosen - Faculty pianist Josh
Rosen presents original music with Stan
Strickland, saxophones, voice; Brian
Hamilton, Fender Rhodes, laptop; Lenny
Stallworth, bass and Adam Sturtevant, drums

October 26 — John Funkhouser

October 27 - Larry Baione - Guitar depart-
ment chair Larry Baione, with special guest
faculty vibist Ed Saindon, will present a con-
cert in the mainstream jazz style using the
instrumentation reminiscent of the "Red
Norvo, Tal Farlow, Charles Mingus" jazz
recordings. The concert will also feature the
Assistant Chair of the Bass Department, John
Repucci and Chair of the Ensemble
Department, Ron Savage.

ist Jeannie Gagné presents blues and rock
originals and music by Etta James, Bonnie
Raitt and others performed by faculty mem-
bers Danny Morris, bass; David Cowan,
drums, Steve Heck keyboards with special
guests Yoni Embar, guitar and Dylan Wolff,
drums.

November 1-Berklee Brass Quintet directed
by Charles Lewis/Against the Grain Jazz
Trombone Quartet.

November 3-Senior Marimba Recital: Bring
Me Men - Percussionist Martha Cipolla pres- .
ents classical marimba, timpani and multiple
percussion solos. Other styles include
Brazilian folk, tango, pop/rock free improvisa-
tion and compositions by Astor Piazzola,
Guillo Espel, and Elliott Carter, William Kraft
and Ney Rosario, with special guests Jon
Singer, Vessela Stoyanova, Sandra Aran and
Udi Wahrsager.

November 4-New Directions — Faculty vocalist
Lisa Thorson presents improvised music for
her quartet--Tim Ray, piano, and faculty
members David Clark, bass and Tony
Gaboury, guitar—-including the compositions
and arrangements of Ellington, Kenny
Wheeler, Edu Lobo, Ray, Clark, Gaboury and -,
Thorson. |
