David Friend Recital Hall Concerts
February 12 — Jazz Vocal Series - Under the direction of faculty vocalist Maggi
Scott, alums of previous jazz vocal series performances will perform jazz stan-
dards accompanied by a faculty rhythm section including Scott on piano. Special
guests: Vox One.
February 17 — Scat Trall Blues Visur Dance Pols —Under the direction of Berklee
faculty member Allen LeVines, the 14 voice Scandinvian Vocal Ensemble
“Stambandet” performs authentic Nordic music including dance tunes and ballads
- from Norway and Sweden as well as “trall,” Scandinavia’s unique vocal imitation of
fiddlers playing dance music—a tradition often compared with scat singing.
February 19-4:00 pm — Ron Mahdi Plays the Ron Mahdi Ensemble Songbook -
Faculty member bassist Ron Mahdi presents Jazz, R & B and funk music for quin-
tet featuring Woodwind Department chair saxophonist Bill Pierce, Ensemble de-
partment chair Ron Savage, drums, faculty members Consuelo Candelaria and
trumpeter Darren Barrett performing compositions by Woody Shaw, McCoy Tyner,
Ronnie Matthews and Freddie Hubbard.
February 19 - Untied Skates of Amanita — Faculty guitarist Ed Blomquist pre-
sents collective free improvisation for guitar, synthesizers, drums, saxophone and
experimental instruments. '
February 23 — Berklee Composers in the 21 Century - Composition Department
Faculty members present works with a variety of instrumentations under the direc-
tion of Louis Stewart. Ken Ueno will present a work for voice, violin and percussion.
In addition works by Marti Epstein, Scott Fessler, Andrew List, Rick Applin, Francine
Trester, Beth Denisch and Thomas McGah will be performed.
February 24 — Bass Department Student Concert - Under the direction of Assis-
tant Chair John Repucci, five bass students— Justin Marcellus Brian Quinn Mat-
thew Fitz-Henry, Hogyu Hwang, Rodrigo Ponce will lead their bands in an evening
of original compositions, in a variety of styles including funk, fusion, hip-hop and
jazz originals.
February 25 — Bruce Katz Organ Trio featuring David “Fathead” Newman —
Faculty keyboardist Bruce Katz presents jazz and blues performed by organ, gui-
tar, drums and special guest saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman.
February 26, 4:00 pm Tell It Like It Tis’ - Faculty vocalist Armsted Christian pre-
sents a combination of jazz, Latin, R & B and spoken word originals and music by
Nina Simone and Curtis Mayfield for an eight piece ensemble as part of Berklee's
Black History Month Music Celebration.
