Tonight's concert honors the memory of Alex Ulanowsky and the many contributions
he made to the world of music both as a performer and an educator. His performance
experience was extensive and included gigs with Jon Hendricks, Buddy Rich, Pat
Metheny, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Red Norvo, Bobby McFerrin, Alan Dawson, Herb
Pomeroy, James Williams, and John Scofield to name just a few. He had founded and
was the president of New England Music Services and was affiliated withthe Harvard
Musical Association and the St. Botolph Club. At Berklee, Alex was the Chairman of
the Harmony Department from 1973 to 1981 and the Core Music Studies Department
from 1981 to 1983. He was responsible for the development of Harmony 1-4, the basic
principles of which are still in place today. He also oversaw the development fo
"Reharmonization Techniques and Modal harmony," "Contemporary Trends in Chord
Progression," "Advanced Modal Harmony," and "Harmonic Considerations in Impro-
visation." To say the least, Alex was a respected and crucial member of the Berklee
community. His expertise and sense of humor are sorely missed. His many
achievements and enthusiasm for music will continue to be an inspiration for us all.

for all the musicians involved,
