L ESSON 9
BRASS

The brass section is composed chiefly of two instru-
ments. The trumpet and trombone.

The Bb Trumpet: Practical Range-

Note: Many trumpet players have the ability to go be-
yond the given range. It 1s advisable, however, to use the
Practical range unless you arefamiliar with the trumpet

player's range.

To trancpose for trumpet, raise the concert note one full

step.

The trombone, despite belng pitched in Bb, is a non-trans-
posing instrument. It is written in the bass clef. As in the
case of the trumpet, the trombone's range is flexible, de- f'”,,,gl

pending upon the performer.

In scoring a brass trio from trio form, tw"trumpets get the

top two tones, while the trombone takes the lowest tone.
