This fi:;formance by FOUR THE TIME BEING is the first major
concert by this new group. The variety of styles evident
in the compositions played tonight reflect the wide array
of musical interests found within the group. Traditionally,
in jazz music, the maintenance of a steady pulse has been
the constant over which harmonic and melodic development of
time is as important to an interesting performance as the
development of harmony and melody. Thus, in the music of
this group, there may be heard a pulse that is secondary to
the one established. This may cause a shift in the time
feeling or create a sense of two or more simultaneous
pulses. This concept of performance creates more musical
options for both performer and listener.
