Robert Nesta Marley was born a bi-racial child in the tiny town of Nine Mile in the hills of central
Jamaica on February 6th, 1945 and passed away (melanoma cancer) on May 11th, 1981 at the
tender age of 36. His music erupted from the absolute destitute squalor of the Western Kingston
ghetto’s, from the near civil war-like conditions on the island resulting from Jamaica’s role as pawn
in the Cold War, and from his INTENSE passion and gift to tell the truth...backed up with LOVE.
He was and continues to be a revolutionary warrior, who, with a poetic stanza and a few bars
of mesmerizing reggae groove music could topple and set straight the most corrupt and ignorant
mindsets and institutions. For many across the globe Marley’s music is not some nostalgic past time
used to escape, but deep nourishment in a world that at times is beyond insane.
Tonight we want you to join us in saying, happy birthday and THANK
YOU SO VERY MUCH BOB! (We mean it when we say want you to join us...please feel
free to get up, stand up and dance and sing along!)
The Berklee Bob Marley ensemble is populated by talented young musicians from around the globe
who have taken Assistant Professor (piano) Matt Jenson’s class, “The Music and Life of Bob Marley,”
where the participants not only play Bob’s music but learn about his life and message, and are con-
stantly challenged to connect their own musical journey to higher purposes of raising human con-
sciousness and truth-telling as inspired by Marley.
Matt Jenson’s Liquid Revolution band takes equal inspiration from Marley’s music and message but
connects it to current issues of today with a fresh musical voice. The group, made up of Berklee
faculty, current and recently graduated students, and area professional players, released their first
recording, “Dragonfly Taxi” in 2014. The Liquid Revolution — it seeps into everything.
