Berklee Performance Center Concerts

February 11 - Black History Month Music Celebration-DeAmma Battle/Rumbafrica
DeAmma Battle and the Art of Black Dance and Music presents a performance of African-
rooted dance, music and folklore. Then Tshibangu Kakima and Rumbafrica present music
and dances from the Congo incorporating the sweet vocal harmonies and lilting dance
thythms of classic Congolese rumba as well as the non-stop beat of modern soukous.
Guitar theatrics, percussion breakdowns and traditional dancing are all part of Rumbafica’s
stage show.

February 16 - Bryan Oliver/It Ain’ Over "Til Its Over - Saxophonist Bryan Oliver presents
his band in an evening of original pop, jazz, and funk. Then vocalist Maureen Murphy
offers an evening of Rhythm & Blues, pop, funk and gospel with featured soloists Bryan
Oliver, saxophone and Brent Irvine, trumpet. Other performers include Cathy Chalmers,
percussion, Charlie Paxson, drums, Chris Joerger, guitar, E.J. Smith, keyboards and musical
director Arthur Blume. Faculty member Dennis Montgomery and the Reverance Gospel
Ensesmble and background vocalist Tiffany White, Nicole Jones, Bethany Wright and Erin
Vulgamore will also be featured.

February 17 - Trichy Sankaran - Percussion Department presents visiting Artist Trichy
Sankaran. Professor Sankaran is a world-renowned percussion virtuoso, Indian music
scholar, and composer. He has concertised widely in India, South-East Asia, Europe,
Australia and North America. In addition to his usual traditional settings, he has per-
formed with Gamelan, Jazz, Electronic and African music ensembles and has concertised
on four continents with Nexus and World drums.

February 18 - Antonio Hart in Concert - Berklee alumnus Antonio Hart brings his group to
the Performance Center as part of Black History Month Activities. Mr. Hart has released a
number of albums as a leader including the Grammy nominated Here I Stand on Impulse.
He has also recorded with Nat Adderley, Cyrus Chestnut, McCoy Tyner, Robin Eubanks,
Slide Hampton, roy Hargrove, Dizzy Gillespie and Terence Blanchard.

February 22 - Bass Department Student Concert - Bass students—

— under the direction of Department Chair Rich Appleman, and Assistant Chair John
Repucci perform jazz, funk, rock and fusion composiions in six small groups with special
guests faculty bassists

February 23 - The Paul Stiller Band - Faculty vocalist Paul Stiller is joined by fellow
former Vox One members and current Berklee faculty Jodi Jenkins and Yumiko Matsuoka
as well as vocalist Tom Basket, bassist Mike Rivard, percussionist Jerry Leake and drummer
Eric Kerr in a performance of original pop/rock songs which draw from blues, jazz, gospel,
folk and world music styles. Group and solo improvisation pieces will also be featured.

February 24- Write of Spring - Under the direction of Jackson Schultz and Ken Pullig, this
concert features the writings of faculty from the Jazz Composition department performed
by an all-faculty band with varied instrumentation from 10 piece group to larger en-
sembles. Special guest pianist, composer and arranger Jaki Byard will have a composition
performed and Eric Mingus will be guest vocalist on Jeff Friedman'’s arrangement of
Charles Mingus'’ tribute to Duke Ellington “Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love.”
