Blockchain: The Next Wave of Music Industry
Disintermediation
7 Haviland Street, Room 231
Imagine a world in which musicians cut out the middlemen
and retain control over their music—circulation, credits, terms
of usage, and where and when it's played—and are paid
immediately when a song is downloaded or played. Artists
including Imogen Heap, Zoé Keating, Radiohead, and D.A.
Wallach are key drivers in a movement that seeks to debunk
the long-standing, top-down format of the music industry
and return power to artists. The idea is to harness the power
of blockchain technology to provide free, internet-based
platforms for artists to distribute and track their music how
they see fit. Can this technology revolutionize the music
industry? This session will give an overview of the issues
and opportunities around blockchain technology and how it
directly relates to the ongoing narrative of disintermediation
within the music industry. The presenter will share firsthand
accounts of how this technology is being used by artists and
companies such as Intel and National Public Radio.
