Light Excelleth Darkness 2007

I. Light Excelleth Darkness (4:28)

Il. Crucible (5:05)

lIl. Fair-as the Moon, Clear as the Sun (5:21)

Mark Ponzo, trumpet, Jeong Soo Kim, piano

Composer Notes:

Arrays of Light is lyrical, expressive, and extremely demanding of the per-
former. My fondness for mixed meters and complex rhythms pervades much
of the work.

Restless Airs, is closer stylistically to Suite for Flugelhorn than the earlier
Arrays of Light. Each movement describes a mood. Suite for Flugelhorn
follows the multi-movement format of a Baroque Suite. The larger horn

and mellower tone quality provide for different writing techniques.
Transformations, | explore several different compositional themes with duo
trumpets. Light Excelleth Darkness is a classic three movement sonata in a
twenty-first century setting. The piano has a large role in providing declama-
tion to the trumpet lines and creating a dynamic textured wash of sound.
