SPRING ‘86

Double Concert — GAMBO COMPANY/IN THE FIRST STEP —
Bassist Naoki Matsuura opens this concert with original contem-
porary jazz—rock performed by his quartet, The Gambo Company.
In the second half, the group First Step, led by composer/bassist
Koichi Osamu, performs original fusion music.

HARBINGER IN THE WINDS — Faculty saxophonist Jimmy Mosher
presents an evening of contemporary jazz with compositions by fac-
ulty members Bob Freedman and Greg Hopkins and special guest,
guitarist Mick Goodrick.

Double Concert — MATSURI IV FRIENDS/TOSHIHIKO MASUI AND
HIS ENSEMBLE — Senior guitarist Steve Pang opens this concert
with original gontemporary fusion performed by a quintet with special
guest, faculty saxophonist Bob Zung. In the second half pianist/com-
poser/arranger Toshihiko Masui directs an eleven-piece ensemble in
a program of original contemporary jazz.

AN EVENING WITH THE BERKLEE RAINBOW BAND — Faculty trom-
bonist/composer Phil Wilson brings his acclaimed Rainbow Band to
the Performance Center stage for an evening of fusion compositions
by group members and other contemporary artists.

Double Concert — OUTBOUND/CUCKOO’S NEST: SECOND
FLIGHT — To open this double concert, drummer Ben Perowsky
presents "Outbound, " a program of straight ahead contemporary
Jazz for quintet with compositions by Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter,
Dave Liebman and others. In the second half, senior composer/
arranger/woodwind player Paul Faatz presents a set of modern,
avant-garde, pan-galactic jazz in a variety of instrumental settings
with featured soloists faculty saxophonist Allan Chase, pianist
Christian Jacob, and saxophonist Donny McCaslin.

Double Concert — ETHNOFUSICOLOGY/DARCEL! — Faculty
trumpeter Bill Scism presents his student ensemble in a program

of original music that combines contemporary electric sounds with
horns and a bamboo flute. In the second half, facully drummer
David Weigert presents a program of pop/rock and rhythm and blues
originals for his seven-piece ensemble featuring student vocalist
Darcel Spear. -

POLY WANTS A RHYTHM — Drummer Jack Cook offers an evening
of varied music and group settings. In the first half, a quintet will
perform ECM style original compositions. After intermission the
group Digital Hands, with faculty members Tinftlagans, trumpet,
Steve Rochinski, guitar, and Fred Lipsius, sax, will perform jazz—rock
fusion compositions by group members.
