February 21 — Trumpet Summit — Faculty saxophonist Ed Tomassi
presents Trumpet Summit perfomring bebop and post bebop arrange-
ments of Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard and Clifford Brown compositions.
Featured performers include Berklee faculty trumpeters Greg Hopkins,
Paul Fontaine, Jeff Stout and George Zonce and saxophonists Larry
Monroe and Ed Tomassi.

February 22- African Essence-Behind the Music: - As part of this year's
Black History Month Music Celebration, Detrece Lavender leads a
performance troup outlining the contributions and influence of African
Culture on America’s entertainment industry. The group will use acting,
dance poetry and vocal music to illuminate the contributions of Black
people to the development of virtually all styles of Western entertain-
ment.

Directed by Detrece Lavender, with faculty advisor Donna McElroy.
Exhale: This show will showcase many of the songs featured on the
Waiting to Exhale movie soundtrack as well as exhibit the urban contem-
porary style that has made Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds one of the
leading African-American composers today. Also featured will be ten
female vocalists and a rhythm section. Directed by Claude Kelley, with
faculty advisor Dennis Montgomery .

February 26- Bass Department Student Concert - Under the direction of
Assistant Chair John Repucci, the following bass students will lead their
bands in an evening of original compositions, jazz standards, fusion, funk
and new age music: Garth Stevenson; Ben Das; Anat Romem:; Daniel
Thieme; Fernando Mainer.

February 27- From Samba to Rumba /You-Night — Pianist Rebecca Cline
presents a program of Latin Jazz, drawing on rhythms from Cuba and
Brazil. Performing modern Afro-Cuban arrangements of Ellington classics
and jazz standards, as well as original music inspired by the Brazilian
style of Eliane Elias the rhythm section will include faculty bassist Oscar,
bass and faculty guitarist Aquiles Baez. This concert promises to deliver
an exciting blend of jazz harmonies with Latin rhythmic intensity. Vocalist,
composer, arranger Jennie Laws leads a group of phenomenal musicans,
including horns, strings, vocals and rhythm section, through an original
set of soul, funk, Rhythm & Blues and Pop with jazz undertones.

David Friend Recital Hall Concerts -

April 3- Soo-Jung Kae Masters Recital — Original jazz compositions, 20"
century classical music and free improvisation will be presented in solo,
duo and quartet settings by masters degree candidate, pianists Soo-Jung
Kae. Compositions by John Cage, Anthony Braxton and Soo-Jung Kae will
be performed with special guests saxophonist Charlie Kohlhase, Brass
department chair trombonist Tom Plsek, Chang U Choi, bass and Luther
Grey, drums will be featured.

April 4 — Vibraphone Performance Workshop - Vibes Performance Work-
shop with Dave Samuels and Dave Friedman.

April 5 - Nanae Mimura Marimba Concert - Marimba concert with faculty
member Nanae Mimura as part of Percussion week activities.

April 6 - Jerry Tachoir Vibe Concert - Vibes Performance with Visiting
artist Jerry Tachoir as part of Percussion week activities.

April 9- Jazz Vocal Series - Voice department faculty member Maggie
Scott presents student vocalists performing jazz compositions and
standards by Gershwin, Porter and others, backed by a rhythm section
with special surprise guest.

April 12- Harmony Department Spring Concert — the Harmony
Department’s annual concert will feature compositions and arrange-
ments of original music performed by members of the department and
special guests. A wide variety of music will be presented, from vocal/
piano duets to saxophone quintet with rhythm section. Latin jazz, main-
stream jazz, contemporary songwriting and other styles will be featured.

April 17- Manuel Kauffman Masters Recital - Masters candidate bassist,
composer, arranger Manuel Kauffman presents contemporary jazz
compositions arranged for “Nonet,” a nine piece ensemble featuring
Berklee faculty members Greg Hopkins, trumpet, Jeff Galindo, trombone
and Shannon LeClaire, saxophone.

Department. The Percussion Department's most
advanced performing ensembles will present an
evening of new, contemporary percussion
literature featuring works by Cage, Gibbs ana Kraft. (

May 3 THE SPRING SING THING WITH THE BERKLEE
CONTEMPORARY CHOIR directed by Tom Martin, MASS
TRANSIT directed by Charles J. Sorrento and
introducing the BERKLEE JAZZ KORALE. - The
Annual Spring Voice Department Concert will |
spotlight three talented choral ensembles
performing contemporary music ranging in style
from "Singers Unlimited" to Persichetti.

May 4 SHEILANCE PRODUCTION - Vocalist Sheila '"Harmony"
Ford and saxophonist/vocalist Lance Bryant
present a program of jazz,funk and gospel
utilizing an outstanding Big Band, vocalists and
dancers.

May 5 THE STUDIO ORCHESTRA -~ Directed by Donny Nolan.
This unique ensemble returns to the Berklee
Per formance Center for its annual spring concert
in an exciting program that features some of
Berklee's most talented performers. |

May 9 A DOUBLE CONCERT- THE COLLEGE SINGERS conducted
by Kenneth Greenhouse. Berklee's new choral
ensemble will be featured in its first
performance highlighted by a variety of musical
styles. This program of twentieth century music
of American composers, including some
award-winning vocal jazz arrangements, draws
from the talents of over fifty singers. In the
second half of the concert student vocalist
Randy Crenshaw will lead some of Berklee's most
talented performers through a program entitled
