Mark Harvey (1946- ) is a trumpeter, composer, minister, activist, and educator. Originally from Binghamton, New York, Harvey played with Syracuse University’s unofficial school big band while pursuing his bachelor’s in American studies; he also began his composing career, writing and conducting two jazz liturgical services. Harvey earned his master's in theology in 1971; that same year he co-founded the Jazz Coalition, which worked to promote jazz in community settings through concerts and educational programs through the mid-1980s. In the mid-seventies, in partnership with Arni Cheatham, the Jazz Coalition created the JazzEd program to bring jazz education and performance to schools during the desegregation of the Boston Public Schools. Harvey received a PhD in Social Ethics from Boston University and studied with Jaki Byard and George Russell at the New England Conservatory of Music.
