Sound engineer and music producer Leanne Ungar was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ungar studied classical flute and dance growing up. After two years at the University of Minnesota, she moved to New York City and began her career in sound engineering, first at an educational publisher’s studio and later the Sound Ideas studio from 1972-1974. Starting in 1975, she then spent a year engineering for Cat Stevens at Le Studio in Canada before returning to New York to work at A&R Recording in 1976. Ungar began freelancing in 1977, and would go on to produce and engineer for artists such as Janis Ian, Leonard Cohen, and Laurie Anderson, as well as for film and television shows. In 2004, Ungar joined Berklee College of Music’s Music Production and Engineering department. She teaches classes such as Critical Listening, Senior Engineering, and Mix Lab, and works with the Wadhams Production Scholars.
