Biographical Summary

Trumpeter and bandleader Albert “Al” Natale (1923-2020), a native of Boston’s North End, began playing bugle at age twelve before transitioning to trumpet. Natale played in the St Anthony’s School band and trained under Ralph Fuccillo, lead trumpet in the RKO Boston Theatre orchestra, which he joined in the late 1930s. Natale was soon invited to tour nationally with the Bob Chester Orchestra, and through the 1940s would play with several big bands. Returning to Boston, Natale played for society orchestras, ice shows, the Barnum and Bailey Circus, and Mayor Kevn White’s inaugural ball. In 1964, he organized the Penthouse Tenants, the original house band at Paul's Mall during its first years in business. He served as vice-president of the Boston Musicians Union during the 1970s and 1980s. Natale established the Al Natale Brass Scholarship at Berklee College of Music in 1995. In 2003 he formed the Al Natale Classic Swing Orchestra, which he also conducted. Natale retired from performing music in 2018 at age ninety-four after an eighty-year career.
