Brasileirinho (pronounced Bra-zee-lay-ree’nyoo) is a Boston- based quintet which performs instrumental Brazilian music. The repertoire, performed with typical instrumentation and original arrangements, covers a variety of styles such as choro, baido, maxixe, frevo, and samba. Several of tonight's selections will feature the choro (pronounced shoh-roo) - a traditional style developed from the improvised way local musicians interpreted polkas, waltzes, mazurkas, and schottisches. The choro is a challenging and expressive musical form that allows great freedom for ornaments, interpretation, and improvisation. It can be heard at a dance party or as chamber musicin a concert hall. After more than one hundred years, it remains one of the first authentic instrumental styles in Brazil that is still captivating audiences around the world.
