Assistant Chair Stephany Tiernan and faculty member Neil Olmstead will play “Three Quarter Tone Pieces” by Charles Ives; Jorge Martinez leads a quintet performing original Latin music; and Marc Rossi presents original fusion, funk, and world beat music for sextet. WRITE OF SPRING—The Jazz Composition Department presents faculty compositions by Bob Pilkington, Jeff Friedman, Jackson Schultz, Bill Scism, and Marc Rossi, and pieces by students Dan Graham, Mercedes Rossy, Fumi Tamara, and Federico Schneider in settings ranging from quintet to small big band under the direction of Bob Pilkington. MARTI EPSTEIN: PIANIST/COMPOSER / RATS LIVE ON NO EVIL STAR—Composition Department faculty member Marti Epstein presents original compositions and works by Bach, Beethoven, and Bernstein. Featured will be her Eleven Basho Haiku sung by special guest vocalist Maria Tegzes. In the second half, faculty composer/ arranger Darrell Katz leads the Dreamland Orchestra in a performance of contemporary big band originals and music by Jimi Hendrix. TRANSITIONS / NEW DREAMS—Trumpeter David Boato leads a sextet in a program of jazz originals and compositions by Enrico Rava with special guest faculty trombonist Hal Crook. Then, saxophonist Kenji Kikuchi presents original jazz compositions performed by his quintet including Mercedes Rossy on piano and Fernando Martinez on drums.
