July 12 July 18 July 19 July 25 July 26 Aug 1 Aug 2 Aug 9 Berklee Performance Center Concerts SUMMER 1989 FIVE-WEEK WELCOMING CONCERT: BLUES AFTER DARK— Faculty guitarist Robert Doezema presents his six-piece group Blues After Dark performing rhythm and blues, fusion and traditional blues styles by such composers as Albert Collins, Willie Dixon, Jack McDuff and others. Special guests include five-week faculty members Herman Johnson, Dave Weigert, Rick Peckham, Roy Okutani and Daryl Lowery. IN SEARCH OF THE HOLY BEAR/ISH—Senior vibraphonist Philippe Cornaz leads a quintet in a program of jazz and Latin jazz originals, and compositions by Ornette Coleman, Dave Johnson and others. In the second half, guitarist Bert Cotton presents jazz/funk styles for quartet, with original compositions as well as selections by Miles Davis. JAPANESE SUMMER IN BOSTON/THE BACK BAY BRASS — In the first half, faculty pianist Makoto Takenaka presents his quar- tet performing traditional Japanese tunes and folk music in a jazz setting, as well as original compositions. In the second half, faculty trombonist/composer/arranger Ben Elkins leads the 18-piece Back Bay Brass Jazz Orchestra in a program of big band jazz. LIFE TIME/BLUES STRIKES BACK—Saxophonist John Gunther leads his quintet through a program of contemporary jazz originals with special guest faculty flutist Barbara London. In the second half, drummer Takeshi Sato presents his five-piece blues band performing music by Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Cornell Dupree and others, as well as some original compositions. NO CONTEST —Faculty composer/arranger/trumpeter Brian Lewis directs a contemporary big band with jazz, rock and Latin influences. Featured faculty members include Lennie Peterson (trombone), Wayne Naus and Jerry Cecco (trumpets ), Rick Peckham and Bob Doezema (guitars ) and Greg Badolato (saxophone). EL GUEVO—Keyboardist Juan “Pollo” Raffo leads his nine-piece group El Guevo in a program of original fusion compositions. THE NEXT PHASE —Faculty guitarist Ben Sher presents a concert featuring both mainstream acoustic jazz compositions by Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Pat Martino, as well as original contemporary jazz compositions for his quartet, with faculty pianist Tim Ray. FIVE-WEEK BLOW-OUT: I'M ON MY WAY HOME — Directors of the five-week program Rob Rose, Robert Doezema and Dave Weigert present the best of the five-week jazz, rock and fusion ensembles in settings ranging from small groups with and without vocals to a big band.
