April 2 April 3 April 4 April 8 Berklee Per formance Center Concerts SPRING 1991 AN EVENING WITH THE BERKLEE RAINBOW BAND—Faculty trombonist/composer/arranger Phil Wilson leads the Berklee Rainbow Band in a program of jazz, fusion, and rock originals by outstanding student composers and arrangers, including works by Associate Dean of Curriculum Robert Myers, students Matsumi Tori, Mike Genovese, Jose Barros, Mike Yelle, faculty member Phil Wilson, and alumnus Makoto Ozone. Feature vocalists will be Sharine Janse and Cinthia Tignor with Melvin Butler, Julie Sussman, Andreas Mitytermayer, and Pat Loomis among the featured instrumentalists. VOCAL SUMMIT/VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE—Under the direction of Voice Department vocalist Bob Stoloff, the six-member Vocal Summit will perform a cappella in the styles of jazz fusion, funk, Latin, and folk, and will present origianl compositions and works by John Cage, Chick Corea, Evan Lains, and Abund Zu, as well as two freely impro- vised pieces. In the second half, the 12-voice Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Voice Department faculty member April Arabian, will perform a variety of contemporary, jazz, and original vocal group arrangements with an accompanying quartet. Compositions by Charlie Parker, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, and Paul Simon, and arrangements by Gene Puerling and students Jon Dryden and Tommy Kamp will be featured. PAT METHENY WITH GARY BURTON—Famed guitarist Pat Metheny will be joined by Berklee’s Dean of Curriculum vibist Gary Burton and a student group of Seamus Blake, saxophone, Jon Dryden, piano, Victor Merlo, bass, and Mark Miralta, drums, perform- ing music by Metheny, Burton, and others. PERCUSSION UNLIMITED—Berklee’s top percussion ensemble, under the direction of Department Chair Dean Anderson, will perform contemporary percussion music by composers John Cage, Steve Reich, and David McBride. Guest artists include pianists Kathy Supove, Assistant Piano Department Chair Stephanie Tiernan, and Assistant Percussion Department Chair Ed Saindon. A special solo on drum-set and electronic percussion by faculty member Steve Wilkes and Dean Anderson’s performance of “Spiral Constellations” for live computer, mallet MIDI-controller, mallet percussions, and synthesizer will be highlights.
