David Friend Recital Hall Concerts September 27 - Composition Department Faculty Concert — Contemporary classi- cal music for solo instruments, chamber ensembles and voice, featuring Berklee faculty performers and various guests, including Sherman Friedland, clarinet. October 1 — Doug Johnson Trio — Doug Johnson presents his jazz trio, featuring new compositions. October 2 - Carlo Aonzo and the New England Mandolin Ensemble - Carlo Aonzo is the winner of prestigious man- dolin competitions on both sides of the Atlantic, including the “Vivaldi” prize of the sixth annual Vittorio Pitzianti Na- tional Mandolin Competition in Venice as well as the 27th annual Walnut Valley National Mandolin Contest in Winfield, Kansas. Aonzo will perform with the New England Mandolin Ensemble, founded by Berklee faculty member August Watters. NEME features some of New England’s best mandolinists, including classical mandolin icon Mari- lynn Mair (Roger Williams University), multistylist virtuoso Jim Dalton (Boston Conservatory), and mandocello specialist Mitch Nelin. October 3 — Richard Danielpour - Visit- ing artist and Grammy-winning com- poser Richard Danielpour discusses his opera Margaret Garner and music as a humanitarian force. A concert of arias from Margaret Garner will be performed by Gabrielle Goodman, mezzo-soprano; Philip Lima, baritone; Martha Banks, soprano; and Jesse Turner, baritone. October 9 - 8 Shades of Blue - Led by faculty guitarist Craig Hlady the concert will feature originals and standards in a blues based small group setting which will also mix elements of jazz and funk. October 10 — Sal Difusco Project — The Sal Difusco Project will perform original jazz rock fusion material. The band consists of guitar, sax, drums, keys, bass, and percussion. October 15 - Nicholl & Farquharson - Wind Music - The third in a series of concerts by Matthew Nicholl and Mi- chael Farquharson, Wind Music features compositions for woodwind quintet, rhythm section and saxophone soloist. The ensemble includes Nicholl on piano, Farquharson on fretted, fretless, and pic- colo basses, Greg Badolato on tenor sax, Steve Langone on drums, and a wood- wind quintet composed of faculty and area professionals. Nicholl and Farquhar- son each wrote half of the program. October 18 — Esterhazy Quartet - This will be the 10 th year that the Esterhazy String Quartet will be a visiting artist residency at Berklee. This prestigious quartet from St. Louis will be reading student compositions and will be giving comments 0 composers.
