Berklee Performance Center Concerts
SPRING 1987

JAVA MAN — Faculty composer/pianist Bruce Barth presents original
jazz. compositions performed by a sextet that includes faculty
members Allan Chase, Greg Badolato, saxophones, Ken Cervenka,
trumpet, and Bruno Raberg, bass.

SIEMPRE CALIENTE! (Always Hot) — An evening of Latin jaz.
is presented by faculty vibraphonist Victor Mendoza and an eight-
piece ensemble.

ARMS AND LUNGS — Faculty composer/arranger Jeff Friedman
brings a sextet to the Performance Center to play original progressive
jazz including works by special guest famed composer/vibraphonist
Karl Berger.

FORWARD MOTION — The acclaimed group Forward Motion
returns to the Performance Center for an evening of contemporary
jazz originals by group members Tommy Smith, sax, Terje Gewelt,
bass, faculty members Christian Jacob, piano, and Ian Froman, drums.

Double Concert — CROSS BREEZE I1/CLIFF WITTSTRUCK —
Faculty guitarist Ken Taft opens this evening’s music with his quintet
l)(—:rformin 3 contemporary jazz and rhythm and blues. In the second
half, jazz, funk, rock and Latin styles are presented by faculty guitarist
Cliff Wittstruck with faculty pianist Russell Hoffman.

Double Concert — THE LATIN JAZZ UNION/HIGH PLAINS — A
six-piece ensemble led by faculty bassist Irving Cancel opens this
concert with Latin jazz standards and originals. In the second half
faculty saxophonist Rancly Felts offers a new impressionistic music of
the 1980s influenced by an eclectic blend of modal-pop styles, from
New Age to Broadway.

THE ALEX ELIN QUARTET — Faculty saxophonist/pianist Alex Elin
brings a quartet with Gray Sargent, guitar, Charlie LaChapelle, bass,
and faculty drummer Joe Hunt to the Performance Center for an
evening of modern jazz.

Double Concert — MACUMAYE-AYE/SAUDADE — Opening this
concert is bassist/composer/arranger Rafael Reina with an evening of
original contemporary funk and Afi'o-pop styles for a large ensemble.
In the second half senior percussionist Michael Ringquist presents
Afro-Brazilian music for rhythm section and vocals. '

Double Concert — J & F/STOLEN MOMENTS — THE TRADITION
LIVES ON — Guitarist Akihiko Matsui opens this evening’s music
with a quartet playing original jazz fusion compositions. Drummer
David Greenaway then presents acoustic mainstream jazz by
Ellington, Monk, Blakey and others in a sextet setting.
