A Manx Overture Haydn Wood (1882-1959) The Isle of Mountains And Glens ; This Overture is one of several Manx works written by Haydn Wood, and is the outcome of his long association with the Isle of Man. The themes are original though the composer has en- deavored to imbue them with a strong Manx flavor. The opening section is of a broad nature and leads up to a very lively move- ment which forms the principal moyif of the work. This, in due course is followed by the second subject, a plaintive little melody which is used as the basis for a short fugue in the development section. The latter theme leads up to the brilliant ending. Andante And Toccata Vaclav Nelhybel (b.1ยง19) Mr. Nelhybel, born in Czechoslovakia, is now a U.S. citizen and remains active as a composer, conductor and lecturer. In this work frem 1966, the Andante features only the woodwinds and saxophones. They wend their way through a simple melody which grows more and more intense. After a loud climax, instru- ments drop out until only two solo flutes and clarinets are left playing the melody. The Toccata which follows is marked "Allegro marcato" and is a contrast between pounding brass and percussion, and rippling woodwinds. In the finale the Andante's tune is heard played by four solo flutes and punctuated by the whole band. Variants On A Mediaeval Tune Norman Dello Joio (b.1918) "In dulci jubilo" is a melody which has been used by many - composers, among them J.S. Bach, as the subject for a variety of musical works. Mr. Dello Joio was inspired to write a set of variations. They consist of a brief introduction, the theme, and five "variants" which send the melody through five true, met- amorphoses, strongly contrasting in tempo and character, and utilizing the possiblities of the band to the highest degree. "Variants On A Mediaeval Tune" was commissioned by the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation for the Duke University Band. It was first performed in 1963. Norman Dello Joio has served as the Dean of the School of Fine Arts at Boston University.
