30 Concurrent Session IV The Music of Laura Nyro 1108 Boylston Street, Room 317 This session will present the life and music of Laura Nyro—an extremely talented and underappreciated songwriter/artist whose songs were covered by major artists and producers of the 1960s and ‘70s. Her songs were recorded by such notables as: Three Dog Night; Blood, Sweat & Tears; the 5th Dimension; Barbra Streisand; and Peter, Paul, and Mary. Her hits include “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Eli's Coming,” “And When | Die,” “Stoney End,” and “Stone Soul Picnic,” to name a few. Nyro worked with music moguls such as David Geffen and Clive Davis. Her commitment to feminist ideas was well ahead of her time. Even though her life ended at age 49 because of ovarian cancer, she has been honored many times by the music industry for her contributions to songwriting, most recently by composer/arranger Billy Childs, whose album was nominated in 2014 for three Grammys, with the “New York Tendaberry” track featuring Renée Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma winning a Grammy for best arrangement, instrumental and vocals. —Presented by: Tony Carbone —Hosted by: Mary McClory MRI Horn: Brass Pedagogy Informed by Science 7 Haviland Street, Room 203 This session, through MRI films, will provide a window to interior biomechanics that leads to ease and effortlessness in brass playing and contributes to healthy, sustainable careers.
