The Kark King march was composed in 1912 while the Ives was written in 1984. The connection between the two is the Circus motif. The Ives march, in keeping with the unusual nature of most of his music, contains a surprise. B TR PREBEERTT L i s Gustav Holst (1874 - 1934) Gustav Holst wrote his suite '""The Planets'" in 1910. It was a massive tone poem depicting 7 planets in our solar system (Earth was not included and Pluto had not yet been discovered). While the original suite was for orchestra, a transcription was made for band in 1924. This first movement, ""Mars; the bringer of war'", is the only one which is satisfac- toily scored for band. John Williams fans will quickly hear evidence that Mr. Williams was influenced by Holst's work as he wrote the scores to '"Star Wars" and '"The Empire Strikes Back'. INTERMISSION
