Spring 1998

February 3- Collaboration II/Bobby Lee Rodgers & the Herd - Faculty
guitarist David Howard presesnts the Joe Parillo Ensemble performing original
jazz as well as his own group playing rhythm and blues and blues composi-
tions with special guest faculty bassist Jim Stinnett. Bobby Lee Rodgers and the
Herd presents a collage of funky banjo and upright bass performing original
compositions in an acoustic funk style with a bluegrass twist.

February 4- I'm Me And Youw’re Not, Ha Ha - Faculty composer/arranger
Darrell Katz and the Jazz Composers Alliance Saxophone Quartet, Dan
Bosshardt, Jeff Hudgins, faculty member Dan Smith and Phil Scarff, will
perform compositions by Katz and Jimi Hendrix. Also appearing will be
vocalist Angel Gittens and poet Paula Tatarunis.

February 5 -Desert Flower - Faculty synthesist Kai Turnbull presents original
pop/funk compositions with special guest guitar faculty member, Jim Kelly.

February 8- Gospel Jubilee with Vanessa Bell Armstrong
A native of Detroit, singer Vanessa Bell Armstrong grew up on the gospel of
Mabhalia Jackson and the soul of Aretha Franklin. Her astonishing vocal energy
and improvisational skills had critics hailing her the next Mahalia Jackson and
the new Queen of Gospel. She recorded the theme song for the NBC TV show
Amen and was a hit on Broadway in the gospel musical “Don’t’ Get God
Started, “ which toured nationally for three years. Her singles “You Bring Out
the Best In Me,” “ Pressing On” and “Something Inside So Strong” earned
strong airplay on gospel radio. She appeared in the telefilm “The Women of
Brewster Place,” which starred Oprah Winfrey and Robin Givens. She has
released eight albums between 1984 and 1993 and has been nominated for
Grammy and Dove awards while winning Soul Train and Stellar Music Awards.
" In its 14-year history, the Reverence Gospel Ensemble has included more
than 370 students representing countries from Israel, Japan, Greece, and several
others. They have won plaudits at the Black Music Caucus Competition in New
York on three occasions. Under the direction of Dennis Montgomery III, the
choir has performed at Dimmock Health Center’s “Steppin Out” Gala at the
World Trade Center for two consecutive years, and performed at many area
churches.

the general public. Berklee students, faculty, and staff with valid 1.D. are
limited to one free ticket until the day of the show; $1.00 on the day of the
show as available. :
