Berklee Performance Center Concerts February 10-A Tribute to -Sheila E. - Four dif- ferent students band under the direction of renowned percussionist Sheila E. will perform as part of the Black History Month Music Celebration. Sheila E. is a multi-faceted drummer, percussionist, vocalist, songwriter, performer, arranger, producer, composer, instrumentalist and humanitarian. Sheila E. has recorded and toured extensively with renowned artists such as Babyface, Billy Cobham, Natalie Cole, George Duke, Pete Escovedo, Gloria Estefan, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Nicks, Patti LaBelle, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, Tito Puente, Don Was, Stevie Wonder and many others. February 15-New Music Festival- The third annual concert One Night Only Showcases Berklee's best innovative acts performing new compositions and arrangements of vari- ous styles. This year’s acts include: Natalie Harris- performing pop/rock with some blues and R&B ; Brian Nygard/Steve Foxx-"No Overdubs" (Masters of Ceremonies) accapel- la with beats; John Robert & Justin Butler- performing pop rock/alternative; Human Element-lan McGuire, instrumental drum and bass with keyboard, guitar, electronic drum kit; Chezwick- Patrick Balthrop playing rock/electronica for guitar and vocals and laptop computer; Andres Espinoza y los Songos Jala Penos-Contemporary Latin Fusion Sextet with two horns. February 16- Robin McKelle — Faculty vocalist Robin McKelle will present new material in an R&B style with gospel and jazz influences. February 17 - "Our Music, Our History, Our Voice" Members of the Black Student Union under the direction of Ensemble department chair Ron Savage and faculty member Walter Beasley, present a concert that will encom- pass the many elements that contribute to the musical truth and history of Black culture. Featured will be the musical styles of spiritu- als, jazz (Cotton Club,) Motown (Apollo Theatre,) Hip Hop, gospel and blues. February 22-Jeremy Ragsdale/Evan Gutierrez and the Latino Chill Band Talk Politics — Drummer Evan Gutierrez and his band look at where traditional latin music, jazz and today’s urban music intersect. Their perofr- mane will include arrangements of lesser known masterpieces as wella s original mate- rial in styles like Rhumba, Drum and bass, Cha-Chqa and straight up hip-hop. Performers include some of Berklee’s finest Latin players such as Uziel Colon, piano and Ignacio Long, bass. February 23-Write of Spring- This concert features original works of Jazz Composition Department faculty under the direction of department chair Ken Pullig. February 24- Hip Hop Part Il - Justin Hughes presents Hip Hop in concert with faculty advisor Ron Mahdi. This concert will take a journey through the history of hip-hop start- ing from the early 90's to the late 90's, bringing back songs from the floetic lyrics of Lauryn Hill to the unique rhyme scheme of Slick Rick, KRS-One and others. x> 3 &r o3& & 42
