Berklee Performance Center Concerts April 29- Tribute to Duke Ellington - The Professional Writing Division sponsors this concert to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Duke Ellington. The music of Duke Ellington will be performed by The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Greg Hopkins, featuring vocalist Donna McElroy; The Really Eclectic String Quartet, under the direction of Mimi Rabson; and the Paul Beaudry Sextet, featur- ing vocalist Saudah Al-Akbar. Guest commentary by Duke Ellington. April 30 - Tommie Smith/Makoto Ozone/Clarence Penn/John Lockwood - Highly colorful, subtle and original readings of classic gems by Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn, richly interpreted by the Berklee alumni Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith, the virtuoso pianist Makoto Ozone, faculty bassist John Lockwood and drummer Clarence Penn. Choosing some of the best loved standards in the jazz repertoire, Tommy Smith’s sound is unmistakable, remaining true and distinctive honoring the Duke on his 100th birthday. May 7- Commencement Concert - This year's commencement concert will feature the music of honorees singer-songwriter David Bowie, and jazz legend Wayne Shorter.
